What it is

Newcastle Arena is a proposed $499 million, 12,000-seat entertainment and conference centre, to be built immediately north of McDonald Jones Stadium at Broadmeadow on land already zoned for a multipurpose indoor arena. It would replace the Newcastle Entertainment Centre, which council says was built 34 years ago with an intended operating life of five years. Council forecasts the new venue would draw more than 640,000 people a year and contribute almost $41 million annually to the local economy; it also says the existing centre’s condition costs the region more than $20 million a year in acts that refuse to book it. These are council figures; no independent audit of them is on the public record.

The conditional timeline

As set out by Lord Mayor Gavin Morris: if the government and opposition both commit construction funding before the March 2027 state election, the existing Entertainment Centre could be demolished by 2029, freeing its site beside Broadmeadow station for housing. The showground ring and grandstands are local heritage items and are excluded from any demolition. Every step of that chain is conditional on the $484 million.
